Luís Canotilho was born in 1957 in the parish of Vila da Ponte/Sernancelhe, where he never lived.
He spent his childhood and youth in Lisbon, Águeda and Matosinhos.
He married a woman from Trás-os-Montes, the teacher and artist Helena Canotilho, and since 1979 he has lived in Bragança and Quintanilha, where they have a common art and painting studio.
His life is Trás-os-Montes, which includes his character and culture.
He therefore considers himself to be a Trás-os-Montes native.
Graduated in Fine Arts/Painting from the Escola Superior de Belas Artes do Porto (ESBAP);
PhD in Philosophy and Educational Sciences.
Post-Doctorate in Plastic Composition.
He is the Coordinating Professor of the Department of Visual Arts at the School of Education of the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança;
He has previously served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the School of Education of the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança;
He is responsible for supervising master's dissertations in the field of Visual Arts at IPB and doctoral dissertations at UTAD.
He is an evaluator of applications submitted to the 2019 Competition for Doctoral Scholarships of the Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P. (FCT) in the field of Arts.
He is a researcher at CITAR (Centre for Research in Science and Technology of the Arts of the Catholic University).

Painting Exhibition at the Abade de Baçal Museum in Bragança. Historical/architectural and visual study of the Tua Line (reduced railway line). The work was carried out entirely on foot, with the stations and platforms being painted during 1990. Organized by the Ministry of Culture.

Creation of the Coat of Arms of the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança.

Installation of tile panels on Rua Alexandre Herculano in Bragança, consisting of 13 squares (122 cm x 122 cm), 26 rectangles (122 cm x 322 cm) and 1 right-angled triangle (122 cm x 322 cm). Theme: Local government in the District of Bragança.

Execution of the Tapestry of the Noble Hall of the Civil Government of Bragança. Dimensions of 800 cm x 800 cm with 64 m2 in the fine stitch technique of Arraiolos. Collection of the Civil Government of Bragança.

Visual Arts / Mural Painting – Decoration of two rooms of the Grande Loja Legal de Portugal / Grande Loja Regular de Portugal in Porto through painting of the ceilings and introduction of numerous symbolic sculptural elements. Techniques used: Sculpture and acrylic. Dimensions of the two rooms: 93 m2 and 100 m2.
