Luís Canotilho was born in 1957 in the parish of Vila da Ponte/Sernancelhe, where he never lived.

He spent his childhood and youth in Lisbon, Águeda and Matosinhos.

He married a woman from Trás-os-Montes, the teacher and artist Helena Canotilho, and since 1979 he has lived in Bragança and Quintanilha, where they have a common art and painting studio.

His life is Trás-os-Montes, which includes his character and culture.

He therefore considers himself to be a Trás-os-Montes native.

 

Academic qualifications

Graduated in Fine Arts/Painting from the Escola Superior de Belas Artes do Porto (ESBAP);

PhD in Philosophy and Educational Sciences.

Post-Doctorate in Plastic Composition.

 

Pedagogical-Scientific Responsibility

He is the Coordinating Professor of the Department of Visual Arts at the School of Education of the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança;

He has previously served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the School of Education of the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança;

He is responsible for supervising master's dissertations in the field of Visual Arts at IPB and doctoral dissertations at UTAD.

He is an evaluator of applications submitted to the 2019 Competition for Doctoral Scholarships of the Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P. (FCT) in the field of Arts.

He is a researcher at CITAR (Centre for Research in Science and Technology of the Arts of the Catholic University).

He has held 41 solo exhibitions of painting using the oil on canvas technique in Portugal and abroad.

1988

Pillories of the District of Bragança. Collection of the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança.

1990

Painting Exhibition at the Abade de Baçal Museum in Bragança. Historical/architectural and visual study of the Tua Line (reduced railway line). The work was carried out entirely on foot, with the stations and platforms being painted during 1990. Organized by the Ministry of Culture.

1995

Creation of the Coat of Arms of the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança.

Installation of tile panels on Rua Alexandre Herculano in Bragança, consisting of 13 squares (122 cm x 122 cm), 26 rectangles (122 cm x 322 cm) and 1 right-angled triangle (122 cm x 322 cm). Theme: Local government in the District of Bragança.

2001

Execution of the Tapestry of the Noble Hall of the Civil Government of Bragança. Dimensions of 800 cm x 800 cm with 64 m2 in the fine stitch technique of Arraiolos. Collection of the Civil Government of Bragança.

2005

Interior decoration of the “Estrela do Nordeste – Development Association” Hall, which is part of the structure of Rigor Store, no. 57.

2006

Execution of the interior decoration project for the Vinhais City Council. Works: 4 oil on canvas works, 1 ceramic stoneware panel and 37 coats of arms in polyester resin. Collection of the Vinhais City Council.

2010

The "Game" and the "Culture". Two works in the oil on canvas technique. Collection of the Municipal Council of Vinhais. Cultural Center of Vinhais.

Direct award competition for the "Execution of 1 ceramic panel to be integrated into the wall of the 1st floor of the Town Hall building, as part of the conversion works of the Forte de S. Direct award competition for the “Design, supply and installation of 35 tile panels - Parish Councils / Casas Novas", referred to in the invitation dated December 7, 2012, for the wall of the Vinhais Cultural Center - Solar dos Condes de Vinhais. Invitation 2014 dated 2012/12/07. Total dimension = 3150 cm x 90 cm (28.35 m2). Collection of the Bragança City Council.

Visual Arts / Mural Painting – Decoration of two rooms of the Grande Loja Legal de Portugal / Grande Loja Regular de Portugal in Porto through painting of the ceilings and introduction of numerous symbolic sculptural elements. Techniques used: Sculpture and acrylic. Dimensions of the two rooms: 93 m2 and 100 m2.

2016

Visual Arts / Painting – Production of five portraits in oil on canvas technique (50 cm x 65 cm) of the presidents of the Vinhais local authority from the period after the 25th of April, on permanent display in the assembly hall of the Vinhais City Council.
